2 Cincinnati OHIO United States Standing Women Cincinnati
Where standing: TWO locations: Hyde Park Square by the fountain (Erie Avenue) Clifton /Burnet Woods by the fountain (Clifton and Ludlow)
My Story: In Cincinnati 40 women, men, and children stood at Hyde Park Square and another 20 stood at the Burnet Woods fountain. We read the proclamation in unison, read the Standing Women statement then began 5 minutes of silence heralded by the ringing of bells. We broke the silence with another peal of bells and then joined in conversations about how we might birth the world we long for. Happy Mother's Day!
3 Brookfield Wisconsin United States http://uucw.org
Where standing: At approximately 12:30 p.m. we will stand on the edge of the road on the East property of Unitarian Universalist Church West, 13001 W North Ave., Brookfield, WI 53005. We will plant a Peace Pole, and then move to the roadside with our signs saying "Help Create Peace" and "Mother's Day for Peace." This witness for peace will take place following two worship services (9:15 and 11 a.m.) for all ages on the topic of Mothers' Day for Peace!
Intro/dream: I am the Rev. Suzelle Lynch, minister of Unitarian Universalist Church West. My dream is of a world peaceful, fair, and free of war and violence -- a world free of racism and oppression, and one we live upon sustainably. These dreams are part of the mission of the church I'm honored to serve.
My Story: On May 9th the topic of our worship services at Unitarian Universalist Church West was "Mother's Day for Peace." Julia Ward Howe's proclamation was read, and ten children performed a musical, "Project Peace." We held a ceremony to plant our Peace Pole outdoors following the service, followed by a peace witness -- standing silently with signs saying "Help Create Peace and Mother's Day for Peace" -- along the busy street in front of our church. Our event was televised on the local CBS news station (Channel 58 in Milwaukee) that evening at 5:30 , and reprised at 9 p.m.
4 San Francisco California United States http://www.codepink.org
Where standing: We will stand on the Golden Gate Bridge. Our participation will be part of our monthly CodePink March for Peace, that takes place on the Golden Gate Bridge, starting at noon every second Sunday. We will begin from both sides of the bridge at noon on the eastern walkway, converge in the middle and march back to the San Francisco side for a rally and singing for peace. We are anticipating to be at the west tower at 1:00 to participate in the Standing Women action. All are encouraged to join us!
Intro/dream: I dream of a world with no violence, no war. Where adults solve all of their problems in a non-violent peaceful way. Where the lives of all childen have equal value to the lives of our own. Where the concept of "War is Obsolete" comes to fruition. Peace to all, every day, in every way!
My Story: There were about 25 of us that participated in our monthly CodePink March for Peace on the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. At about 1pm we gathered in a circle near the south tower of the bridge, read the Standing Women pledge, then stood for 5 minutes in silence while visualizing the realization of a better world for the children of the earth. This silence was initiated and ended by the clanging of a beautiful bell. After completing our march at the south plaza, overlooking the bridge, we read aloud Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation and stood with banners and signs, including our newly made Mother's Day banner that states: "WE WILL NOT RAISE OUR CHILDREN TO KILL THE CHILDREN OF ANOTHER MOTHER." Then, individually, we shouted out our various reasons for why we stood in unity to say "Mothers say no to war"! We hope that we will be hundreds more next Mother's Day. Please join us!
5 Maple Ontario Canada
Where standing: i will be standing outside my home, near the ravine which borders our property. I chose that location because it is a natural setting greenspace which will not be developed and is host to a variety of wildlife species
Intro/dream: I'd like to see a world where people can live together in harmony regardless of race, religion, cultural differences.
My Story: Hi. I was excited to participate in the stand on Mother's Day. The message is an important one and it really resonated with me. I chose to make my stand at the end of my driveway which borders on a ravine/green space which will never be developed. I thought that, given the wish for a healthier environment, the view of the green space would be appropriate. We recently moved to this house and the ravine was a major influence. My wonderful husband took me out for brunch on Mother's Day as a surprise. I was not home for the 1:00 timeframe. I was at a gallery. For those Canadians who participated, I was at the McMichael Gallery which is dedicated to the works of the Group of Seven artists, who are most noted for their Canadian wilderness landscapes. I chose to make my stand there since I couldn't be at home. I explained to my husband what I was doing, how important it was and he stood with me. I did the next best thing though...I asked my 14 year old daughter to stand in my chosen place and read the mantra out loud for anyone who might have been passing by. She understood why it was important and we vow next year to stand together and to include more women with us. I am very fortunate to have shared this experience with her and with all of you. Thank you for creating such a powerful forum to share this message and this dream. I hope to one day see it come true, if not for my generation, then for my daughter and her children and beyond. Sincerely, Pat Priemer
6 Chillicothe OHIO United States
Where standing: I will be standing near a rose garden on Liberty Hill Road at Chillicothe, Ohio, USA.
My Story: The world and its peoples will be nurtured and will thrive in direct relationship to the involvement of women. Because of ongoing crimes against humanity, we no longer have the luxury of deluding ourselves into thinking that men should run the world. Do men nurture and empathize as strongly as women? We can no longer keep our feelings hidden away inside us. We must stand, literally and figurately, in unity. As I stood in my newly planted pine trees I reflected on the many atrocities facing people in this world, situations that otherwise nice people in their quiet homes may never realize exist. These are stories that do not make front page headlines in major newspapers. Why? Because they're dangerous to cover, they are often clandestine, and economies thrive on their continuation. A woman near and dear to me shares stories she finds in her work in the international arena. These are not stories of hyperbole or exaggeration. These are not propaganda. These are real situations that are brought to light with some risk. The problems I speak of involve child slavery. It exists in the world in various countries and in various industries and have worldwide economic implications. I love, love, love chocolate. Just recently it came to my attention that a good portion, around 20% of the chocolate on the world market, is produced with the use of child slaves. Yes, slaves. Not just children trying to help out their families with the household budget. Chocolate that is not cultivated with the use of child slaves will be marked "100% Ethically Traded". Look into it. Get informed. Get involved. Another problem with child slavery is the trafficking of children. This one sometimes makes headlines but rarely do the articles mention that sometimes families sell their children into slavery. All the children taken into slavery are not abducted. And the stories, if you can dig into them, get even worse. In some, violence is involved. And it's not enough to find these children and release them from captivity. They often have nowhere to turn but back to the streets. They need a safety net, job skills, a place where they can live and work in dignity. Stand strong, Women of the world. Unite your voices against atrocities against humanity. Speak up. We will have the world that we allow. Envision a better world, one with unity of purpose where all peoples can live in peace and thrive, where no one is used and abused. If not for yourself, be strong enough to stand for those who have no means of speaking for themselves. Really, I urge you to expand your comfort zone and speak up. I am fortunate to live in a place where I am allowed to plant trees, own property, and raise my family without undue stress. Many years ago, my grandmother told me, "Strive to make this a better world, if all you can do is plant a flower bed." For Standing Women, I stood among my pine trees, knowing that this is one little way to make it a better world. Also knowing that's not enough. Stand with me, Women of the world, and stand strong. No longer can we be silent.
7 Bowen Island British Columbia Canada http://mamaproject.com
Where standing: On the grass in the middle of Artisan Square. Afterward we will head over to the MAMA exhibition at the gallery to hold MAMA Conversation: a group story and poetry gathering for anybody who has ever had a mother.
Intro/dream: I am a daughter, sister, wife, granddaughter, niece, aunt, friend, and... mother. My dream is that we will all learn to respect and value each other as well as ourselves, so that, in loving ourselves, we can find compassion and community for the whole world. That is peace.
My Story: I left the gallery, where I was exhibiting the MAMA project, and went out on the lawn in the middle of the square, where I was joined by 7 others, to stand. As we stood, a few people walked by, looked questioning at us, and continued walking. Many kept checking back, as we stood silently, some holding hands. At 1:05, I rang the bell I always bring: a brass bell in the shape of a woman with her hands on her hips!! Then we all held hands, thanked each other for the moment, and expressed our desires for a happy world. I went back and reopened the gallery.
8 Marblehead Massachusetts United States
Where standing: In pretty, little local park we gather at 12:30p. The park is surrounded with beautiful trees and bushes. We have a short ceremony where call in all our ancestors, read the story and stand in silence. At 1:30p we part by taking a flower from the center of our circle, sending each other off with peace.
My Story: It was a beautiful sunny but extremely windy day......we had to build a small stone funnel to hold up our vase of brilliant, white rose in the center of our circle. After reading "The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering" to approximately 15 people from our community. One of the members of our community came forward with his impressive peace gong and called in all the healing elements, the sacred directions and gave blessings and gratitude for Mother Earth and her waters while striking the gong. We focused as he read the Standing Women intention. Then we all stood in silence for five minutes at 1PM with the rest of the world! We joined hands and closed our circle with the sound of our voices with three continuous OMs, shared the beautiful roses with all who attended and parted to enjoy a wondrous Mother's Day celebration in our own individual way. It was a most glorious way to start this afternoon. This has been the footprint for our Mother's Day Gathering since 2007. Thank you for this momentum....it has moves many.......
9 Lansdowne ON Canada K0E 1L0
Where standing: I'll be standing at the top of a hill above Fodey Lake where I can see for 25 Kilometers in any direction... each day I find my grounding and my place in the universe there.
Intro/dream: I dream of the absence of violence and the presence of social justice
My Story: I stood with 5 other women (and our dogs) at the top of a large hill near Charleston Lake Park (Ontario) where we could see nothing but trees and lakes for several kilometers in a 360 degree view. It snowed! and it was cold! ...and we loved it. Very unusual for this time of year. We stood for 5 minutes in silence and took some time with each of the 4 Directions to meditate and focus our attention and intentions for social and environment justice and the presence of a positive peace. Then we walked in the woods and marvelled at all the woodland flowers. The pink lady slippers were up... such a gorgeous sight.
10 Felton California United States
Where standing: I will stand in the center of my labyrinth... in the Garden of the Beloved www.peggyblack.com for photo of garden and labyrinth

I have hosted a monthly Sound Pod for the community to come together and play with free sounds, sounds that express our emotion. I feel when people can freely make sounds that will begin to speak their truth. "The conscious and intentional use of sound is our birthright and our source of power." Peggy Black
My Story: I was joined by two friends and we walked the labyrinth in the Garden of the Beloved... singing until we arrived at the center where we shared a prayer for all and I offered sacred sounds.. to veiw labyrinth go to www.peggyblack.com
11 Selah Washington United States
Where standing: I am not sure at this time just where I will be standing because we are celebrating baptism of two grandchildren. I will find a place to stand at 1pm to honor this movement. Thank you for organizing it again this year.
Intro/dream: I am dreaming of a world that honors and respects all people in all places for the spirit that exists within each of us. I dream for the children that they know a world filled with loving peace and kindness, safety, prosperity and a bountiful healed earth.
My Story: Dear Standing Women, I was in yakima washington attending my grandson and granddaughters baptism in the First Presbyterian church so at 1pm I found myself still in the service watching my grandson try to dive into the baptismal font and baptize himself! I held sacred space during the service on a beautiful spring Mother's Day surrounded by stained glass windows and listening to some very old songs sung by a very ancient choir. The choir did not seem to be enjoying themselves at all. But I prayed for all the people of the world and imagined what peace would look like for me. Thanks for doing this. Diane Tilstra
12 Zanesfield Ohio United States
Where standing: We will be having a women's retreat that weekend and we will stand on Sunday morning, and read the proclimation. Thanks for doing this again! Mary Williston
Intro/dream: We will be especially thinking of the people of Haiti and all of our relations--ALL OF THEM--along the Gulf Coast.
My Story: We were having a weekend gathering of women and we read the proclamation and stood stood outside as our morning meditation.
13 Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Where standing: ~in my garden (or, on the front porch, if it's raining) at House #2939, Kebele 05, Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (for new friends--we live in the "Old Airport" area, near the new South African Embassy and the International Community School.) Simple refreshments will be served afterwards; feel free to linger for an hour or so. Addis friends--call if you can, or, just show up at 12:55 p.m.!
Intro/dream: Born and raised in India of loving American missionary parents, I had the opportunity to travel and be aware of other ways of thinking and believing than those in my own family. I began to question things young. Since graduating from high school there, have continued to choose to travel and work in many places of our world. Taught school for 40.5 years, students betw ages of 3 and adult (38 yrs w/ primary children), the last 2 w/ middle and high school), in 8 countries on 3 continents; have been devotedly married for nearly 34 years, with a grown son and daughter; have enjoyed being an active member of the Bahá'í Faith for nearly 42 years. One of the significant teachings of Bahá'u'lláh is the equality of women and men [like the two wings of one bird] and the crucial importance of educating both girls and boys; the world's first women's martyr was a lovely Persian poetess in the mid-1800s--when she was strangled, she declared: "You can kill me, but you cannot stop the emancipation of women!" Women's and girls' rights, especially in developing countries, has been a passion of mine for decades, ever since being strangely moved by Helen Reddy's "I am Woman" in the 1960s, and especially after learning about FGM in West Africa in the late 1970s. I am deeply happy about joining the "Standing Women" movement, and will spread the news to friends around the globe. May the Creator continue to inspire all who give love, service, and energy for the advancement of humanity!
My Story: Although I'd sent numbers of emails inviting friends to stand with me, I ended up standing alone on the front porch in my garden in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but it was a wondrous, refreshing experience. First, I read aloud the statement from the website about why women and men around the world were standing at 1:00 p.m., and was touched deeply. I visualized not only a world of peace, justice and unity, but also the energy of an hourly pulsating wave of people standing all around the globe as 1:00 entered each time zone. My precious Ethiopian friend, Dr. Nardos Minasse, said she would be standing in Pennsylvania at the Susquehanna River, and I thought of her standing there, alone or with others, seven hours later. A slight breeze moved the wind chimes I'd purchased with my niece in South Africa eight years ago. Suddenly, thoughts of her lovely young face were followed by those of her mother, my beloved sister; then my consciousness swirled me to our mother, our grandmothers, all the women relatives and women friends in countless places in this world and the next. I heard my voice lovingly saying each name aloud. I found myself further moved, to tears, as awareness of the desperate, crying needs of our Earth, and our true oneness simultaneously filled me. I was astonished, when I opened my eyes, to see that it was suddenly 1:09! I reread the statement aloud, breathed a silent prayer of thanksgiving, and with renewed energy, continued with a demanding day. I committed myself to standing every time I hear there will be another 5-minutes!
14 Eureka California United States
Where standing: In front of the Court House, on Fifth and I Streets.
Intro/dream: Grandmother of five, looking toward the future of our generations. Blessings and peace.
My Story: I stood in front of the county courthouse on the main avenue through town. Although I forwarded the message to my group of women friends, only one showed up to stand with me. Since she is not someone I see frequently, I'm afraid most of the time we stood there we were catching up with each others lives. But we were there.
15 Carpinteria CAlifornia United States
Where standing: We will stand on the northeast corner of the intersection of Linden and Carpinteria Avenue
Intro/dream: I remember working for peace at the time of the nuclear arms race. I was afraid my children would not live to grow up! But, praise God, they did and now have children of their own. I dream of a world where people welcome each other and have no reason to be afraid.
My Story: Five women came to stand at our peace corner, the corner of Carpinteria Avenue and Linden. in the town of Carpinteria, just a few miles south of Santa Barbara in California. We stood for thrity minutes, holding our peace signs. Mine said, "Stop the war." We all knew each other, except for one, because we stand on that corner every Friday from 5 to 6 pm, with our peace signs.
16 Vancouver B.C. Canada
Where standing: Good Evening, Just attended a lecture with Jean Shinoda Bolen and she told the audience all about you. I have not contacted all the women in our circle yet, but we will be outside on the beach either at English Bay or in North Vancouver. I am going to get as many as I can together and even though it is Mother's Day, many do not have children or not cherished by them so we should have a goodly number. Glad to have found you and thank-you for this. With many Blessings, Diane Michell
Intro/dream: My dream is that we will remember that we are all connected. Our beautiful planet, our Mother, needs us to awaken and see how we need to honour her and all the life that exists here.We have no where to go and if she dies, we die. I am now the crone. living alone in a large city can be lonely but I work with seniors. Growing old is something we are not taught and it has many challenges. I have a small plot in a community garden, I bike and belong to a creative writing group. I have strong spiritual woman friends and we do circle, drum and try to have fun. Love to read, drink cups of tea, and I love movies.
My Story: To Standing Women Everywhere, Mothers Day here in Vancouver, B.C., Canada was lovely. I spent the day with two other Crone friends. We started on a wondrous plant filled balcony eating wholewheat/spelt pancakes and vast cups of green tea. Lots of laughter, lots of blessings and then at 1:00 we stood and each spoke of what we wanted to stand for and where in the world they were. As we stood in silence the balcony was visited by tiny birds who gave a sweet song to the moment. People in back yards were gardening and the air was filled with the fresh scent of recently cut grass. A very life affirming time. As Jean Shinoda Bolen said, it is the crones who will make a difference now. We have the time, the wit and the wisdom. Remember, if you see something unacceptable to a child, another human being,an animal, or some other life form, speak out and say, NOT IN MY PRESENCE. Blessings to you all, Diane.
17 Charlemont Massachusetts United States
Where standing: We will stand on the steps of the Charlemont Federated Church, 175 Main Street, Charlemont, MA 01339 413-339-4294 Thank you sincerely, The Rev. Cara B. Hochhalter
Intro/dream: As a pastor and a woman, I have dreamed of peace all my life. I am 58 years old. I believe that there is an abundance of hope in this world and that peace is possible.
My Story: I announced as part of my sermon for our small UCC church in the hills of northwestern Massachusetts, that I was going to stand for peace...on Mother's Day... and would join Standing Women from all over the world. I was pleasantly surprised when 4 other women joined me on the steps of our 1845 New England church in Charlemont, Massachusetts. We stood on the old slate steps for 5 minutes, at 1:00, in silence. Cars passed by and looked, the librarian and her husband walked by and we all just smiled and nodded...she waved and figured we were doing some kind of silent vigil. All of us imagined the many other women standing for the peace for which we all yearn. It felt healing and important. One mother said her son said it wasn't going to make any difference..."but if she believed it would, well all right." We could have stood for much longer... we hugged and went our way, a little bit more uplifted. Thank you Standing Women... In grateful peace, Cara B. Hochhalter
18 Juneau Alaska United States http://gatherthewomen.org
Where standing: At 1:00 pm on Mother's Day, we will stand on the shore of Twin Lakes near a children's playground, across from Douglas Island with its four majestic mountains, separated from Douglas by the Gastineau Channel, backed up by the mountain range we share with Canada that dwarfs our small city of Juneau. We live in the Tongass National Rainforest so it might be raining. We're used to it. If the sun is shining, it will glisten on the snow capped mountains.
Intro/dream: My name is Barbara Belknap and I have lived in Alaska 26 years. I love it here. We are surrounded by exquisite scenery and water. I have found over the years that I need to be near water. I am involved in several women's organizations and am President of two: Gather the Women and the Alaska Women's Network. I'm also a lifetime member of the National Organization for Women. My dream for all is freedom from violence and the freedom to pursue happiness.
My Story: Juneau, Alaska. We had five women standing by Twin Lakes. I rushed there from my home, which is five minutes away, after celebrating Mother's Day with my family. One woman brought a wonderful bell- a "clearing bell" with an incredible resonance. One woman brought her issue with her, which was complex and sad, and she wanted me to know all about it before we made our circle. So, I let her speak for a bit, then asked that we stand in circle. It was 1:10 by then. I suggested that we all breathe deep from the abdomen until we were all centered. Soon, we were standing very still, with the sounds of the children playing on the nearby playground in the background. Ingrid rang her bell inside our small circle. We closed our eyes and I felt very peaceful and at one with women standing around the world. I could feel the energy. Without saying a word, we reached out to hold each other's hands. We did not read anything, but thought our own thoughts. Mine were on the children of the world and for women everywhere that they would be safe from violence. After five minutes, I asked Ingrid to ring her bell again and she rang it five times - once for each of us. I thanked everyone for coming and they thanked me for calling the circle.
19 happy valley Oregon United States http://findyourkumu.com
Where standing: Happy Valley Park
Intro/dream: I share the same dream as you! Peace, Love and Harmony...........
My Story: This is the first year I participated in standing women so it was a small crowd but meant so much to me. After we were done with church my 2 sons went over to the park and played baseball until 1:00. Then I read my boys (9 and 10 years old) the story of the grandmothers. Together we held hands in a small little circle and they repeated the prayer with me. This was the best mother's day present I could have asked for to be present and praying for peace with my 2 favorite people. Thank you for spreading peace in peaceful ways, it is truly the only way it will work. We may be small and alone but we are all one and connected in all ways!

My Story: Thank You! Thank you! for getting me to a ritual prayer silence! I felt a link to my sisters and the planet and I hoped for the BEST in LOVE, Visualizing Iridescent Light of Love and Peace surrounding the globe and our hearts. Then my grown son came to pay homage with a rose bush! A garden reward. Thanks again! May, the calling out of "We Love YOU!" sail accross the universe, Rainbow Love!
